Halloween is just around the corner, quite literally. And if you’re like me, then you’re looking around for a last-minute costume idea. I’m usually very well organized in many parts of my life. However, when it comes to Halloween costumes, for some reason, I’m always behind on which one to do each year. Every year, I think of a costume idea in August and then tell myself that I’m still early and have time to buy my costume. But then October comes around and I’m looking around for a last-minute costume idea because I waited too long for my first costume idea.
Anyway, I also like to do a couple’s costume with my husband every year as well. Since the addition of our dog to our family, we also like to do a family costume each year. So, I must get creative each year to make sure that our furry baby can join in on the Halloween fun as well. Since I know quite a few couples have the same struggle as me too, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite couples’ costumes from the past few years. I hope this gives you some inspiration for your couple’s (and/or family’s) costumes! If you need some more costume ideas, check out my previous Halloween costume idea posts: 2020 post, and 2021 post. Anyway, without further ado, check out my couple’s costume ideas below.
Food Items
Costumes that are based on food are my favorite kind of costumes. They can be witty, funny, and so easy to pull off! There is also not much effort involved in a food costume. You can either buy one or make one yourself. Even though I’m not much of a DIYer myself, I have made a food costume in the past. It was simple and easy to put together, but I also had to get creative because my husband wasn’t a huge fan of costumes back then (I’ve eased him into it just a little bit).
For one of the costumes, I did a play on “peanut butter” and “jelly”. Usually, people wear half a piece of bread with peanut butter and the other half a piece of bread with jelly as a costume. Since my hubby wasn’t the biggest fan of costumes back in the day (and still isn’t but he’s better now), I had to get creative with this costume. So, I got a tan shirt, a purple shirt, some iron-on letters, and made a make-shift “peanut butter and jelly” t-shirt costume. It was a huge hit at the Halloween party we went to and I’m glad since it didn’t require much effort.
Last year, I got lucky, and my hubby agreed to do a full-on costume. So, we were ketchup and mustard, and our furry baby, Riley, was a hot dog. Again, another hit at a Halloween party. Such a hit that Riley won the costume contest (and he won lots of treats).

Movie Characters
Hollywood (and/or Bollywood) movies can be so iconic. Some characters stay with you for a lifetime and their style or outfits become so epic. This is one of the easiest costumes to do if you’re doing a modern-day character. Since you’ll most likely have that type of clothing in your wardrobe already. I love doing movie characters (or TV characters) as Halloween costumes since it’s so easy to pull together as a last-minute costume idea.
One year, we did Mean Girls characters as a Halloween costumes. I was the iconic Burn Book – which was so easy to create. Get a hot pink dress, print out the “Burn Book” logo and add it to your hot pink dress. My husband was Damien during the gym scene at the end. So, he got a hoodie, put the hood up, and held a sign that said, “She doesn’t even go here”. We included our furry baby, Riley, in the couple’s costume and put a sign on him that said “You can’t sit with us”.
In that same year, we had another Halloween party to go to so we did Schitt’s Creek characters. My husband was David Rose and wore a “Nonchalance” shirt with white-rimmed glasses. I chose to be Alexis so I curled my hair like hers and wore a bohemian/girly outfit based on one of the episodes.

Superhero’s
Superheroes are another easy and quick costume to make last minute. Since there are many variations of a superhero costume, you don’t always have to go out and buy a superhero costume. As mentioned above, my husband isn’t the biggest fan of going all out on Halloween costumes. So, wearing a full-on Halloween costume isn’t something he’s up to doing. As always, I must get creative and find a way for him to enjoy this costume without feeling uncomfortable.
The easiest way to pull off a superhero costume last minute is to wear a graphic tee and proper bottoms- and head to your party or festivities! One year, we wore matching batman graphic tees, so we ended up being Mr. and Mrs. Batman for Halloween that year.
Where’s Waldo
One of my favorite and easiest costumes to do is Where’s Waldo. It’s such a fun, easy, and low-effort yet popular costume to do. I feel like, most people have a red/white striped sweater in their wardrobe. And if they don’t then it’s easy to find especially if you’re trying to put together a last-minute Halloween costume. The bottoms are typically a pair of jeans, add black-rimmed glasses and a beanie – and you have yourselves a Where’s Waldo costume!
I enjoy doing this costume since it feels more like a costume and meets my husband’s requirements of how much costume is too much for him. I love doing a costume that requires clothes from your closet that you can recreate into a Halloween costume.
